Outreach Programs

Stony Brook University sponsors a number of out reach efforts for earth science high school teachers students, undergraduate and graduate students in the earth sciences, K-12 students and teachers and the general public. 

The Earth Science Educational Resource Center  conducts workshops, distributes public domain computer software via the World Wide Web, makes available educational materials and serves as a source of educational tools for teachers. Glenn Richard as well as a large fraction of the faculty and a significant fraction of the graduate students in the Department of Geosciences participate in or lead activities associated with the center.

Earth Science Research Project - The Earth Science Research Project offers opportunities for Earth Science Teachers to learn research approaches and to under take independent research for graduate credit in GEO 589 Research for Earth Science Teachers .

Long Island Geologists   consists of about 400 participants who are high school teachers, faculty in colleges and universities, and professionals working  for government agencies, public agencies, and private companies. Each year the activities include field trips in October and June, and  in April a conference on the  "Geology of Long Island and Metropolitan New York". In-service credit is available for teachers for these events.

Museum of Long Island Natural Sciences  The educational programs are designed to use Long Island as a natural laboratory to explain and interpret geological and natural history. Educational programs have included: laboratory activities for K-12 students, exhibits in the Museum gallery, field trips, public lectures, visits to area schools, the development of teaching tools and curricula, and in-service teacher training.

Science Open Nights

Science departments at Stony Brook offer  Science Lectures on almost every Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in ESS OO1 during the school year.

These presentations are intended for:
bulletthose interested in new developments in the sciences,
bullet high school students and teachers
bulletundergraduate and graduate students
bulletprofessional scientists interested in new developments

In-service credit is available for teachers attending the lectures. 

Geology Open Night -   Open night lectures are usually on topics related to the current geologic research of  faculty, staff and students at SUNY Stony Brook. These lectures are generally held at 7:30 p.m. in ESS 001 Lecture Hall on the fourth or last Friday of the month during the school year, September through November and February through April. 

Astronomy Open Night - Open night lectures are usually on topics related to the current astronomical research of the faculty, staff and students at SUNY Stony Brook. These lectures are generally at 7:30 p.m. in ESS 001 Lecture Hall on the first Friday of the month during the school year September through December and February through May. 

The Worlds of Physics - Lectures on topics related to the current research by research in physics of the faculty, staff and students at SUNY Stony Brook. 
These lectures are generally at 7:30 in ESS 001 Lecture Hall on the second Friday of the month September through December and February through May.

The Living World -  Lectures on topics related to the current life science research of the of the faculty, staff and students at SUNY Stony Brook. These lectures are generally the third Friday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in ESS 001 Lecture Hall.

Our Environment - Lectures on topics that consider Environmental Concerns that directly impact Long Island and Metropolitan New York.
