MICHAEL SERVETUS- YOUR WORDS LIT A FIRE

Written by UUFSB Senior High Class and Fran Proto, Oct. 2003

To tune of "We Didn 't Start the Fire " by Billy Joel

John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Taft, and Fillmore too.

These are statesmen who all admired you.

They were for democracy, they weren't for hypocrisy.

Through them, and others like them, your ideas just grew.

Ralph Waldo Emerson...was a Unitarian.

T.S. Eliot, ee cummings, Longfellow too.

Charles Dickens, BretHarte...writers who were very smart.

Herman Melville, Louisa May Alcott,

They are but a few.

CHORUS:

Your words lit a fire

Which they tried to silence...with their fiery violence.

Your words lit a fire...

Then ideas flew higher...and you inspired.

Some UUs were creative, many were quite innovative.

They helped change the world...so people could live well.

Charles Darwin, Frank Lloyd Wright often worked throughout the night

Ben Franklin, P.T .Barnum, Alexander Bell.

Your ideas were the spark to lead the world out of the dark.

Bucky Fuller, Horace Greely spread the word for you.

Bela Bartok, you should know...Edvard Grieg. .and Thor-eau

Oliver Holmes and Carl Sandberg searched for what is true.

CHORUS:

Your words lit a fire

Which they tried to silence...with their fiery violence.

Your words lit a fire...

Then ideas flew higher...and you inspired.

Susan B. Anthony...Simply could not wait to see

The fine day that women would get the right to vote.

Clara Barton, Olympia Brown...they would never let you down

Clarence Darrow, Adlai Stevenson...they are men we quote.

There are those who blazed a trail, some of them wound up in jail.

Dorothea Dix...thought her values could not fail.

Elizabeth Blackwell, Lucy Stone...they proved that you're not alone,

Charlotte Perkins Gilman. .Florence Nightingale.

They were writers, they were fighters.

They were leaders, they were pleaders.

UUs always lead the way,

What else do I have to say?!

CHORUS:

Your words lit a fire

Which they tried to silence...with their fiery violence.

Your words lit a fire...

Then ideas flew higher...and you inspired.

When it comes to scholarage, there's Sam Taylor Coleridge,

Writing of the principles we still live by today.

Daniel Webster, Thomas Paine...proved your death was not in vain.

Ethan Allen, Paul Revere are men who paved the way.

There are those whose works of fiction. .showed off their UU conviction.

Hawthorne's 'Scarlet Letter' was as shocking as could be.

Beatrix Potter's 'Peter Rabbit' soon became a childhood habit,

Even Shelley's 'Frankenstein' had worth and dignity!

Errors of the trinity,

Questioning divinity,

The search goes on for truth,

Justice peace and liberty!

CHORUS:

Your words lit a fire...

Which they tried to silence...with their fiery violence.

Your words lit a fire...Then ideas flew higher...

and you inspired...inspired...inspired...inspired!
