Hi. My name is Linda Selvaggio and I live in Bayport, N.Y. I am an
Environmental Geology major attending Stony Brook University and have recently enrolled in
the M.A.T. program. My goal is to teach earth science at a secondary education level.
I plan to focus on the sedimentary deposition of the material on the bluffs at the David Weld Preserve. I would like to explain how a stratigraphic column is devised and the significance it plays in determining the origin of the sediment and its depositional environment. Long Islands topography was molded by the advancement and retreats of several glacial events. Evidence of these events appear in the sediment, rocks and topography of the area. I would like to create a guide describing: "The Geology of the bluffs at The David Weld Sanctuary". In this guide I will include a brief geologic history of the area and point out the evidence that can be found along the shore to back this up. (glaciers leave lots of footprints) Taking a closer look at the stratigraphic column, I will point out features found in the various beds that help us determine how this sediment was deposited. The guide will be written so the non-geologist can enjoy learning about the history, while others can learn how to construct a stratigraphic column and use the necessary tools needed.
