We will meet at 9 a.m
in room 123 Earth and Space Science
Building on the SUNY Stony Brook campus. We will first review the rock types
among the basement rocks of Connecticut and the possible paths that the
glaciers may have taken prior to arriving on Long Island. We will review
minerals and rock types. We will then characterize the shape, roundness and
types of boulders on the Stony Brook campus evaluating their potential sources
and the possible distances and paths that they may have traveled. After we have
become familiar with the boulders on campus we will go to a North Shore beach
where we will do a careful study of the shapes and rock types from pebbles,
cobbles and boulders. At the beach you will have a chance to collect a range of
rock types characteristic of Long Island’s boulders. Bring a back pack. You
will need to carry the rocks back.
We will go rain or shine.
Wear appropriate shoes or boots for hiking along beaches.
There will be no refunds.
Bring lunch and drink.
The trip will finish by 5:00 p.m.
