Walking Tour of the
"Town of Brookhaven Waste Management Facility:
Waste management in the 1990's"
Waste Management Institute, SUNY Stony Brook
Saturday September 20, 1997
We will meet at 12 noon at the Town of Brookhaven Waste Management Facility Lunchroom. This walking tour will show almost all of the elements of late-1990's Long Island Waste Management: (1) Transfer station, (2) STOP facility, (3) Materials recovery facility, (4) Closed landfill; (5) Landfill being closed, (6) Operating landfill for incinerator ash, construction and demolition materials and other debris, (7) Landfill being constructed with plastic liners and artificial clay, (8) Leachate management facilities, (9) Landfill gas management facilities. Stops 1, 2 and 3 are likely to be closed during the visit, but their role in modern waste management can be discussed from the outside. The tour will certainly focus on engineering controls for environmental impacts from landfills, and will discuss the rationales behind the current regulatory regime. There will be striking, unmatched views of southern Long Island; possible 30 to 40 foot exposures of glacial outwash sediments. The tour will finish by 5:00 p.m.
